　　西元1758年，美国独立战争后，汤玛士杰佛逊带着大女儿、秘书和黑白混血奴仆前往法国担任美国大使，到了巴黎，他结织有夫之妇玛丽亚，他们虽互相爱慕，却因杰佛逊忘不了他的亡妻而陷入胶著。直到汤玛士的小女儿去世，他才发现要及时把握所爱，但玛丽亚已悄然回国。这时，奴仆的妹妹莎莉带著汤玛士的二女儿搬来与他们同住，杰与莎莉因日久生情，发生了亲密关系，后来玛丽亚与杰佛逊重逄，却发现热情不再。虽然杰佛逊想带她回美国，但玛丽亚因诸多顾忌再度不告而别……
